Semantic-Grammatical Criteria For Distinguishing Between Participles And Adjectives

Abstract

This article examines the semantic and grammatical criteria for distinguishing between participles and deverbal adjectives in modern Russian. The study reviews the main approaches to differentiating participles from adjectives and analyzes their semantic, morphological, syntactic, and derivational characteristics. Particular attention is paid to criteria such as the presence or absence of a sense of action, the connection to the source verb, the categories of aspect and tense, voice, the ability to take dependent words, verbal government, the capacity to form degrees of comparison, the existence of a short form, the nature of the lexical meaning, and the degree to which verbal qualities have been lost. The article concludes that a contextual approach is necessary to distinguish between participial and adjectival forms
